[ 6 ] Now one of the famous examples of plaster ceilings of 1650-1660 is that of the Saloon at Coleshill in Berkshire, built by Sir Roger Pratt after consulation with Inigo Jones, and the oval wreath is there as well as the cartouches, so it would appear that the Sparrow House room had its ceiling put in about that period. The walls are panelled in the old style and the bow windows are particularly charming still with some of their old glass and original ornamental catches.
Plaster Ceiling
A much more sophisticated plaster ceiling-and this time happily dated beyond all question-is that in the drawing-room at Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk. Designed for one Henry Timpersley-who was the then owner in 1685 his initials are introduced into the square in the corner. The ceiling edge is again its oval wreath of leaves, fruits and flowers is typical of the rich design of the time-possibly rather overpowering but balanced to a degree by the plain panelling of the walls below. |
