Two Panel Door
WADFIELD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE
c. 1695

The beautifully designed door and doorway from a London house which is much the same date, has all the elegant proportions and fine carving typical of the Wren tradition. This door is heavy, the eight panels are sloped at the sides to fit into their moulded frames and yet leave the main surface of the panel flush with the main structure of the door. The design round the architraveor moulded door frame-is particularly pleasant in proportion, and follows the formula for classic ornament in a leaf design.
The very heaviness of this door makes its setting of wide carved architrave a thing of balanced beauty. Had the door been of the flimsier type of the early Stuart period such a framework would have been utterly out of place.
