One downstairs room is a particularly fine example of workmanship even to the circular iron grate. The fireplace is made of wood decorated with gesso and the iron grate fits snugly into the perfect square of the opening. The grate is designed with side panels carrying the urn and `S' design with the oval marigold appearing at the base and again in the four corners outside the circular fire opening; a tiny ribbon design runs round this opening. The frieze beneath the mantelpiece is decorated with gesso swags and the flattened urn with curved handles in the centre panel. Dentils appear under the cornice of the mantelshelf. In all probability this fireplace was painted in contrasting colours as has recently been done with the decoration over the doorway of the same room. It is a very handsome door, well proportioned, six panels with filigree brass doorplate and plain hinges. The same dentilled cornice as that of the fireplace and the same mouldings in the recessed door frame as that surrounding the fireplace itself are used again, but the frieze is quite different. The bell chain hanging from the acanthus is the same design as that of the swags on the fireplace. The cornice that joins the ceiling to the walls of the room repeats the design of that over the door.
