and couch, arm-chair and curtain, all displayed a stripe in some form or other. Frequently such stripes were woven only, changing the surface of the material like a damask.

From a vast selection of fine Adam influenced Georgian interiors (and many others claimed to be the work of the Adam brothers), one particularly gracious house in Dorset, that of Sadborow, has claimed my attention, for, apart from one large room re-decorated in the early 19th century, the house retains most of the original features of 1775, the year it was completed. Doorways and fireplaces are in the Adam tradition and a fine circular wrought iron staircase with arches leading to the rooms upstairs gives dignity to the entrance hall.
