The really small house was free from such blunders because of its natural limitation of size and the English craftsman pursued his instinct and good taste in equipping such houses with fitted furniture.

 

In the following illustration is an elegantly proportioned cupboard, one of a pair that stand either side of a plain little fireplace in a tiny room in a cottage at Bewdley in Worcestershire. These cupboards entirely fill the recess made by the chimney and are built into the wall forming the main feature of a room less than 12 ft square. Such little gems of architectural simplicity must still grace many little houses throughout the country-and often, for some obscure reason best known to some past owner-such cupboards have been bricked up or covered with wallpaper and have been re-discovered during constructional alterations at a later date.
